Årets album

1. Howard Eliott Payne – Bright Light Ballads
Producenten Ethan Johns gjorde det med Ryan Adams solodebut »Heartbreaker« för snart tio år sedan och nu gör han det igen. Tänk dig en mix av Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, lite brittisk folk och några doser beat. rootsy.nu/recension.php?id=1244

2. Eilen Jewell – Sea of Tears
Med en självklarhet som få kliver hon fram. En blyg blick, en vän stämma och hur många ess som helst i skjortärmen. Ur trollerihatten plockar hon upp country, Byrdsklingande sextiotalspop och femtiotalsrock, som vore den inspelad i Sun Records. Johnny Kid & the Pirates gamla sextiotalsdänga »Shakin' All Over« får sig en omgång, likaså Loretta Lynns »The Darkest Day« och Thems »I'm Gonna Dress In Black«. Men så har vi ju hennes egna alster. De låter ofta som klassiker vid första lyssningen. Ta bara den sugande förföriska »Rain Roll In« eller det reverbstygga titelspåret.

3. Bill Callahan – Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle
Jag är överraskad. En gång i tiden (1997 läser jag nu på skivomslaget) förälskade jag mig svårt i »Red Apple Falls«, Callahanaliaset Smogs sjunde album, om jag räknat rätt. Där tyckte jag nämligen hans beska baryton, svarta humor och ångestdrypande, malande lo-fi fick sin rätta inramning. Nog för att han gjorde bra saker på andra håll också men aldrig så helgjutet. Jag tappade intresset med tiden. Tills nu. Jag har inte hört det tidigare han gjort under eget namn, men har svårt att tänka mig att det skulle kunna mäta sig med detta. I grunden är väl det mesta som vanligt; Nick Drake-mörkt och självömkande. Det är fortfarande gott om träd och fåglar och existentiella grubblerier i hans texter och han har fortfarande - såklart - röst som en ek. Men något har hänt. Melodierna blommar, texterna framträder tydligare och framförallt är produktionen modigare, maffigare. Blås, stråkar och
syntar färgar ytterligt smakfullt sångerna och bygger upp dem till små skinande skulpturer. Det här är Callahans bäst producerade och mest ambitiösa album - jag vill rentav kalla det hans mästerverk. Inledande »Jim Cain« handlar måhända om författaren till »Postmannen ringer alltid två gånger«, men jag anar också en självbiografi; »I used to be darker / Then I got lighter / Then I got dark again«.
